Forthcoming Events

St. Mary’s will be awash with colour on the weekend of June 9th to 11th. As the Eucharistic Congress opens at the RDS in Ballsbridge, St. Mary’s Parish is mounting a fascinating exhibition of vestments. Spanning almost 150 years, these vestments were used in the liturgy since the foundation of the parish church in the mid- 1840’s.

Made from silk, satin and velvet, embroidered with precious gold thread, these colourful vestments are certain to captivate your attention. Several date from Victorian times. Chasubles, dalmatics and copes will be on display in the side aisles of the church. Altar plate and exquisitely bound Missals will be exhibited. Most of these treasures have not been seen for half a century. Parishioners and their guests are invited to an opening of the Exhibition on Saturday 9th June at 3.30 pm. Rev. Michael Cahill P.P of Meath Diocese will explain the history and significance of these rare vestments.

The Lassus Scholars, conducted by Ite O’ Donovan, will sing a short program of Sacred Music. The designer Louise Kennedy, whose boutique is in Merrion Square, will donate a specially- designed chasuble for use in St. Mary’s Parish.

John Mc Quirk of elegant flowers will display a number of arrangements to compliment the vestments.

After the short ceremony, everybody will be invited to a Garden Party (weather permitting) in the beautifully renovated St. Mary’s Garden. This event will be sponsored by Cuisine de France. Admission is free to all events.

The exhibition is open on Saturday 9th, Sunday 10th and Monday 11th June, 9.00 am- 7.00 pm.

Professor Terry Eagleton Lecture – 1st December 2011

A large audience listened to Professor Terry Eagleton when he spoke on 1 December at St. Mary’s. Professor Eagleton spoke on humanity’s perception of God and offered challenging views of Jesus. He noted how we often remould God in our own image, full of our human frailty and limitations. Such a definition fails to engage and convince. We look forward to welcoming our large audience back for our next talk in 2012.
